You can upload, organize, and manage documents in Assist. Uploaded files can be used to support your chats, translated into other languages, or shared with others.
This article explains how document uploads work in Assist, covering both uploads directly in the chat and uploads via the Documents section. While both surfaces share core behavior, certain capabilities and limitations apply only to one or the other.
Shared Upload Behavior (Applies to Chat and Documents)
Unless stated otherwise, the behavior described below applies to both uploads directly in Assist chats and uploads via the Documents section.
All document uploads in Assist follow the same two-phase lifecycle:
1. Upload
During the upload phase, files are securely saved.
- Interrupting the upload (for example, by navigating away) may result in files not being stored.
- Note that upload time increases with the number and size of files.
- A maximum of 100 files is allowed per upload, with no overall limit to how many you can store in Assist.
2. Processing
Once uploaded, documents are processed automatically.
- A spinner indicates that processing is in progress.
- OCR is automatically applied to image-based or scanned documents. If your file has already been OCR’ed, Assist will use the existing text. It won’t be processed again.
- Documents may appear partially or fully uploaded while processing continues in the background.
File requirements and limits
Supported file types
-
.pdf,.docx,.txt,.eml,.msg,.pptx,.xlsx.
File size limits
- Maximum file size: 150 MB per file
Uploading Documents in Assist Chat
You can add documents to an Assist chat either by uploading them directly or by selecting documents that already exist in the Documents section.
To upload a file, click the Paper clip icon Add documents in the chat input field.
You can also drag and drop individual files in the chat.
- You can upload file attachments before or after entering a message.
- Once uploaded, documents will be analyzed as part of your query.
Uploaded documents are stored in your chat history. To remove them, delete the associated query / queries in the chat history.
Uploading Documents via the Documents Section
The Documents section allows you to manage files outside of a specific chat and supports uploading both files and folders using drag and drop.
Documents uploaded here can later be selected and reused in Assist chats.
Before you start
- You must always be one folder level deep. Meaning, file upload and drag-and-drop uploads are not supported at the root Documents level.
- Create a folder first, then open that folder to upload files or folders into it.
Drag and drop behavior
When you drag and drop files or folders into an existing folder:
- An upload screen shows the number of files and folders being uploaded.
- A warning indicates that navigating away may cancel the upload.
Folder handling
- Folder structures, including subfolders, are recreated automatically.
- Documents within folders are uploaded only if they are valid and supported.
- If a folder does not contain at least one valid file, the folder is not created.
Troubleshoot Upload Issues
If your file fails to upload, it may be due to:
- Unsupported format
- File size limits exceeded
- Temporary network or upload timeout
Try uploading again by clicking on the Repeat arrow icon, or contact support@bryter.io for assistance.
