This article will help you:
- understand how you can use the {{\dl}} command to avoid empty lines or paragraphs
in Microsoft Word Documents
With contract-generating tools, text fields can remain empty when adding clauses towards the end of a document. For example, when inputs were optional or certain Text Block Values were not reached by the user. This can lead to unpleasant empty lines that throw off the document's design. This effect can be avoided using the {{\dl}} command.
Example use case
In our example, we will build a Work Order generator, which will include additional terms at the bottom. The Nodes 'add terms heading 1' up to 'add terms content 2' are marked as optional, so your user can skip them if no additional terms are required. If your user were to skip them all, then your generated document would look something like this:
Using the {{\dl}} command
To avoid the empty paragraphs '4.' and '5.' you need to type {{\dl}} at the end of your placeholder. This will ensure that the lines will be deleted if no content is placed within the placeholder.
Note on legacy behavior
If you have built modules that contain Create Document Action prior to June 2020, no action is required. While we may have moved more advanced document automation functionality, the functionality of the old workflow remains. However, we may no longer offer technical support for the old Document Automation Node. We recommend you follow the steps above to update your Create Document Action.
With the latest improvements, you don't need to initialize a Node that is updated later in your module. A placeholder that has not been populated, for example, because the Input Node was set to optional, will not appear in the generated document. In order to avoid the empty line, please add the {{\dl}} statement.
